Propane is a versatile and efficient fuel source, but it's essential to follow proper safety guidelines to ensure a secure environment. Here are some key safety tips:

  1. Professional Installation: Always have your propane appliances and systems installed by qualified technicians. Our experienced team at Wilcox Energy ensures that installations adhere to safety standards.
  2. Regular Maintenance: Schedule regular maintenance checks for your propane equipment. Our experts can inspect and maintain your propane systems to prevent potential issues.
  3. Ventilation: Ensure proper ventilation in areas where propane appliances are used. Adequate airflow is crucial to prevent the buildup of carbon monoxide, a byproduct of propane combustion.
  4. Leak Detection: Familiarize yourself with the smell of propane, which has a distinctive odor. If you detect a gas leak (often compared to a rotten egg smell), evacuate the area immediately and contact emergency services.
  5. Storage Guidelines: If you store propane tanks, keep them in an upright position in a well-ventilated outdoor area. Avoid storing tanks indoors or in enclosed spaces.
  6. Emergency Preparedness: Have a clear understanding of propane emergency procedures. Keep emergency contact numbers accessible, and educate your household or employees about safety protocols.
  7. Educational Resources: Stay informed about propane safety by accessing educational resources. Wilcox Energy provides guidance on proper propane usage and safety practices.

What To Do If You Smell A Propane Gas Leak

A potential gas leak, even when uncertain, demands immediate attention and should be treated with the utmost seriousness. Prompt action is essential to ensure the safety of your home and family.

  • Report It: Maintain a safe distance from the building with the gas leak and promptly call AmeriGas at 1-800-805-0659. If unable to reach AmeriGas, dial 911 or contact your local fire department.
  • Ensure No Flames Or Sparks: Extinguish all smoking materials and open flames immediately. Avoid operating lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones, as flames or sparks from these sources can potentially trigger an explosion or fire.
  • Turn Off The Gas: If safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank by rotating it to the right (clockwise).
  • Leave The Area: Evacuate everyone from the building or area where the gas leak is suspected. Do not return until AmeriGas has confirmed it is safe to do so.
  • Get Your Heating System Checked: Before using any propane appliances, it is essential to have AmeriGas check your entire system to ensure it is free of leaks and safe to operate.
