Meet the Owners

Wilcox Energy:  Serving the local community for over 55 years

We are a privately owned, local company, working from the same address on the green in Westbrook where we have been since 1955.  You can still walk in the front door, ask a question, offer a compliment, or even voice a complaint.  You want to make sure your complaint is heard?  You can march right up the stairs and talk to the owners.  Why does this matter?  Because local doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it does anymore.  Some “local” companies merely offer a local presence.  Maybe they once were local, and still use the same name, but are no longer based out of the area.  Some of these larger companies are not even located in CT!  We live here, raise our kids here, & we are proud to give back to our community in many ways.

David Foster, President

David was raised in the oil business.  Growing up, his father owned Seymour Oil, and David’s humble beginnings into what would become a lifelong career were mechanic’s helper and building maintenance.  The year was 1973.

He continued to work for his family’s company until he graduated from New England College in 1982 with a degree in Business and Economics, after which he worked as a salesman for Dale Carnegie Training followed by a short tenure working for Time, Inc.

In 1985 he returned to the oil business working in sales at Wilcox Fuel.  He put himself through heating school and earned his B2 heating license, eventually working his way to the position of Service Manager in 1987.  In 1990 he purchased Wilcox Fuel, along with his friend and co-worker John McCall.

David has always been active in the oil industry and he began his tenure with the ICPA (Independent CT Petroleum Association) in 1991.  He then joined the technical Education School Board in 1993, becoming VP of the School Board in 1994, where he served for 9 years.

In 1999, David became the youngest person to receive the prestigious Oil Man of the Year award, and then in 2003 he followed this up by becoming the President of the ICPA.  Again, the youngest person ever to achieve this status.  David has served on the Board of Directors for the ICPA as well as the New England Fuel Institute (NEFI) continuously since 1994.

In 2009 he became the chairman of the Heating Oil Committee of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America (PMAA).

David works diligently to support legislature, at both the national and state levels, which improves the oil heating industry.  Both the ICPA and the PMAA work to bring about legislature and reform to improve the oil heating industry including Futures Market Reform  & Heating Efficiency Tax Credits.

David and his family reside in Westbrook.

John McCall, Vice President

John is our distribution strategist.  He works with a broker to hedge his buying in an effort to offer our customers the best oil purchase & price protection plans around.  This has become increasingly difficult in these volatile markets, when oil prices have gone against traditional trends, and failure to do this correctly and professionally has resulted in company’s going out of business.  When you do business with Wilcox Energy, you know that your investment is protected and that every gallon of oil you purchase will be delivered at the promised price whenever you need it!

John has worked in the oil industry for 26 years.  He grew up in Maine, where he was a competitive nordic jumper and member of the ski team.  He worked numerous jobs back then, helping to pay his way through school.  He worked in the paper mill, was a chef, and a ski instructor.  He went on to graduate from The University of Maine, Orono with a BS Degree in Political Science.

Shortly after graduating from school, he came to CT and began his career at Wilcox Fuel. In 1987, he took over running the sales department. He and David Foster became fast friends, and in 1990 they became partners as owners of Wilcox Fuel.

John and his family live in Clinton, CT.  When he is not at work, he enjoys golfing, boating, offshore fishing, hunting, skiing and snowmobiling.
